Management Change at UnumProvident;
01/04/2003
Dear Producing Partner: As you see daily with your customers, companies across North America are facing a challenging business and economic climate. One thing remains constant for us in this period of change, however, and that is our long-term commitment to meeting your needs and those of your clients. We are not immune to the current business environment, and as an important partner I wanted you to be aware of an executive change within our company. Harold Chandler, our chairman, president and CEO, is leaving UnumProvident, and the Board of Directors has asked me to serve as President and CEO on an interim basis until a permanent CEO is appointed. Let me emphasize that there will be no operational changes impacting your business as a result of this transition. As some of you know, Harold and I have worked closely together over the past eight years, and like many of you I have benefited from his contributions to our company. We certainly wish him well in his future endeavors. Looking ahead, we have a strong financial foundation with statutory capital and surplus of $3.4 billion at the end of 2002. We have a solid business plan and a team of over 13,000 dedicated employees committed to helping you and your clients meet their objectives. Every time you recommend our company, I realize that you put your reputation on the line, and we take these responsibilities to you very seriously. Thank you for your continued support, and please don’t hesitate to contact me through our Web site, www.unumprovident.com, with your feedback. Kindest regards, Thomas R. Watjen President and CEO
