Nike Reuse-A-Shoe
Every year millions of pairs of athletic shoes end up in landfills or are disposed of in some other way. In a program called ‘Reuse-A-Shoe.’ Nike takes the rubber, foam and upper fabric from sneakers and chops it up into a material called Nike Grind.
Nike partners with industry-leading sports surfacing companies to incorporate Nike Grind into their quality sports surfacing product ranges – basketball and tennis courts, running tracks, soccer fields, fitness flooring and playground safety surfacing.
For individuals interested in recycling small quantities of worn-out athletic shoes, please visit Nike's website to find a drop-off location near you. If there is not a collection partner in your area, you can mail shoes at your own expense back to:
Nike Recycling Center c/o Reuse-A-Shoe 26755 SW 95th Ave. Wilsonville, OR 97070
One World Running
One World Running is an international program promoting an awareness of health, fitness and nutrition by providing running shoes to those in need in the United States and around the world.
Since 1986, a group of runners in Boulder, Colorado, has collected, washed and sent to Third World countries new and "near-new" athletic shoes. The group is a 100-percent volunteer organization, and the program has now expanded globally. The majority of the shoes come from individuals, and from running clubs or Girl Scout troops (for example) that put on shoe drives. Some of the shoes are new; many are "near-new," which are the ones sent overseas. The shoes that are beat up and not suitable for shipment are sent to Nike Reuse-a-Shoe program.
To donate shoes to One World Running mail them to:
Daily Camera Sports Department 1048 Pearl St. Boulder, Colo. 80302 or One World Running 958 Cherryvale Boulder, Colo. 80303 The next shipments are going to Haiti and Mexico.
